In recent years, we've seen a lot of nostalgia for pipes along the lines of ones that were popular in the 50s and 60s, especially the small, straight, lightweight briars from France. We recently came across some decades-old French pipes that look like they came out of a late 50s Father's Day ad. These were almost certainly made before 1970, and the briar is fully cured and super-light. They come in a variety of classic shapes and feature golden stain with a simulated charred appearance on the top third. They also have faux-bakelite stems. Writer’s Festival Hosts Best-Selling Novelist  

​The Lee University Department of Language and Literature recently hosted best-selling novelist Robert Morgan as a guest in the 2018 Writer's Festival. Morgan presented a reading from his novel "Chasing the North Star," which won the Southern Book Award for Historical Fiction in 2017. Following the reading, a Q&A session took place with those in attendance, and the evening concluded with a book signing.  "We are so grateful that Robert Morgan was with us for the festival," said Dr. William Woolfitt, assistant professor of creative writing at Lee. Voice Students Place at NATS  

​Lee University School of Music (SOM) recently sent 23 students to the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Mid-South vocal competition at the University of Northern Kentucky. Several Lee SOM voice faculty also attended and served as judges. Students competed against universities from Kentucky and Tennessee, such as the University of Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and University of Kentucky. Categories ranged from high school through each collegiate level up to post-graduate students competing at the post-advanced level. “NATS weekend is stressful and tiring, but also energizing and inspiring,” said Tony Deaton, voice instructor at Lee. “I am certain it is a very positive experience for our students. Students Present at Sociological Conference  

​Lee University sociology students recently presented at the Southern Sociological Society 2018 Annual Meeting, held in New Orleans, Louisiana. The topic for this year's conference was Racial Theory, Analysis, and Politics in Trump America.  Lee University's Dr. Arlie Tagayuna, associate professor of sociology, led the trip. He noted this was the largest group he has taken in his years of attending the conference.  Student presenters included Micah Adkins, Megan Balut, Ashley Crass, Jed Foster, Jaclyn Hagan, Harley Lookenott, Jessica Lookenott, Rachel Nichols, Mykah Smith, and David Tolliver.  "It was stellar to learn from so many well-established sociologists and to present the research we've been working on for the past year alongside them," said Adkins. Students Selected as Ledford Scholars  

​Five Lee University students Nicole Tripp, Ana Villa, Ashley Walker, Kyra Williams, and Kelly Wnuk were recently selected by the Appalachian College Association (ACA) as Colonel B. Ledford Scholars.  The Colonel B. Ledford Scholarship offers financial assistance to eligible students who are conducting summer research at ACA member institutions. Tripp and Walker will write an English translation of Philastrius of Brescia's "Liber Diversarum Hereseon" or "Book of Various Heresies." This book is a Latin work from the later Roman Empire and it has not yet been translated into English. Tripp and Walker will translate the Latin text, aiming to provide an English translation that is not only accurate, but also well-written. Tripp is a senior classics major and Walker is a sophomore English

Dirksen to Speak at Saturday’s Commencement  

 Dr. Carolyn Dirksen will deliver the address at the university's spring commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 5, at 9:30 a.m. on the South Campus Quad (between School of Nursing and School of Business). This will be the first graduation ceremony to take place at this location.  Dirksen is completing a fifty-year career on the Lee faculty.  She came to Lee in 1968 as an instructor in English and currently serves as the director of faculty development. Prior to this, she served as the chair of the Department of Language & Literature, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, and vice president for academic affairs.  Dirksen was the recipient of Lee's first Excellence in Teaching Award and has also received the Excellence in Scholarship Award. McNair Program Names Ung as Director  

​Lee University recently named Kevin Ung as the director of the new McNair Scholars Program, designed to prepare students for future graduate and doctoral studies in their chosen field through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. Ung previously was the assistant director of the Union University EDGE Program, which worked with local businesses and national companies to maintain a 100 percent employment rate for all students and graduates of the program’s select cohort. Paris Will Gradually Cancel Paper Subway Tickets and Implement Rechargeable Tour Cards  

On July 12th, it was reported that recently, the Greater Paris Transport Federation, which is responsible for public transportation in the region, voted to replace the Paris traditional paper subway ticket with two types of RFID subway cards.

The report quoted AFP as saying that the two types of subway cards to be launched are called "Free + Pass-Through Card" and "Easy Travel Card", which can be used to take subway, bus, tram (excluding fast track), Paris Regional Express RER (1 and 2 areas only), cableway and bus leading to the two major airports.

The "Free + Passport Card" will be launched in October 2019 and is suitable for people who frequently use public transportation but are not enough to purchase a pass. This type of card is very similar to an ordinary pass card, but it is
